Hey everybody.....sorry if you haven't seen me around the C spot in a while!
I've been blogging on Photographic Design lately.
wordpress is now hosting my main blog and I've really had a hard time deciding whether to keep two blogs going or go to just the one.
The tools I have there are great as far as keeping things organized, searchable, and overall a nice feel.

For all "C spot" followers;I plan on PD becoming my main blog soon-I'll post here when that happens! But would like to invite you over to visit the other side before I do and give any feedback you deem appropriate!

Grand Landscapes Collection opening

A photo from last nights private reception for both Amy Thornton and myself, at the Art Emporium.
Amy was showing her fine art Equine photographs and I was showing fine art landscapes.

We had a large turnout, made new friends ( and hopefully collectors!)

The show will be on display until the end of September and is located on the corner of Quarrier and Hale Streets in downtown Charleston.

These two blades were created in Japan by folding steel into steel. They are incredibly sharp! ( no blood was shed in the photography of these pieces...)
The top photo with the damascus pattern is destined as a presentation to a local well known chef here in "the valley" who will be opening a new restaurant soon- I can't give names since they haven't gotten it yet! ( so, Shhhhh!)

WOW! I am blown away by the creativity shown by my Worldwide Photowalk group here in Charleston WV!
I've tried not to look too much since I have to pick a winner for Scott Kelby's new book "The Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers" , but as I allow members to post their images to the site ( I'm the moderator of the group, as well as the citywalk leader ) I can't help but be pulled in and have a look at some really striking photos!

Worldwide Photowalk- Charleston WV Group

Well, the WorldWide Photowalk in Charleston WV is over- What a day!
the Newspaper article that ran in the Daily Mail came out the day before the walk ( the interview happened two weeks ago) and we had more than 50 "Photowalkers" show up. Everyone was in great spirits and no one seemed to mind the "xtras". ( I was happy to see how HUGE the walk was going to be in town...)
ANyway- we all posed for this group shot before we got started ( Thanks to Traci higginbotham for the photo- I'm in the front row in the Orange shirt and hat)
I want to thank everyone who came out- I've gotten lots of comments about how everyone enjoyed themselves and had a good time, everyone came away with a new appreciation of our fair city, there are a few people starting up local photowalks in THEIR neighborhoods now, etc....
I have to say- This was a resounding success!
And just a reminder to all the registered Charleston Photowalk participants- you must upload your photos to the Charleston photowalk flickr page by midnight on Tuesday, August 26th 2008 to be considered for both the city and grand prizes.

I've got some exciting news about an upcoming event happening on August 23rd called "Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photowalk!

For two hours, along with 117 other cities ( I think that was the last total) all around the globe, photographers will be gathering for Two hours to take photographs of their respective "home towns".

Whether you're a professional, amatuer, or hobbiest- everyone is welcome regardless of skill level. The point of all this is just to have fun!

I've taken ( and seen photos taken ) at dusk, night, day, etc...but I hadn't seen any right at sunset before- I thought this was really beautiful the way the light played out on the city.

Chio loves to hang out with my wife and I; but he doesn't like getting in his bed when he gets sleepy- ( bed located lower right of the image...) He get's into the most comfortable ( and expensive ) chair in the room to rest in and watch TV! (I'm usually the one who gets the floor...)

What a wiener!

........and I haven't blogged. I've thought about blogging, I really have! Most of my earth shattereing thoughts occur around 1 or 2 in the morning, and I've even written them down.
The problem was, next morning I couldn't even recognize my own hand writting. At one point, I was sure an alien must have gotten into my room and left me a cryptic message about the future of all mankind ....if I could only READ the darn thing!

Anyway....

Someone saw an article in a magazine lately that showed how to do a certain technique to get a certain look to an image. Just happened to be a look that I happen to like; in fact -I do to a lot of my work. ( the "Weiner" above is an overexagerated version, ok? Or maybe not sooo much, hmmmm....)

I was asked how that made me feel- ahving my "secret" out there for everyone to see....hmmmm.. The "politically correct" answer or how it made me REALLY feel?

How about both?

First of all, I've written "how to's" for Lexar, Fujifilm, PPS, WV Wild and Wonderful, to name a few with just this kind of information, so It would be hypocritical for me to say anything other than " Hope the check clears! "
Honestly, the internet is full of people spilling their guts on how they do everything, no matter how cool originally it may be- so that nothing seems unique as it once did for long; same goes for magazines ( this one was an industry magazine of how to's and stuff) but by the same turn, it't the stuff we all ( me included ) want to learn about! Otherwise, what's the point?

I wasn't miffed, or mad, for that matter. There will always be people that just don't care for that sort of "look" or technique on something; and that's OK. I'm interested in the ones who want to BUY my work and don't ask questions "how".
The main thing for me is this: I don't do any enhancements or even take a shot with the thought "hmmm- maybe this will sell"

I am only interested in A: Is this something my client want's to convey or B: Is this relevent to what I want to say as an artist?

If I can answer either of those two questions with my photography, then that's what I do. I don't want to be defined by a technique; the technique is only a tool- like my camera is a tool. Technique can become pase' I want to stay relevent and open to new possibilities!

So no, I'm not upset that people can look at my "secret sauce" for images online or in a book- that's how we all learn and I didn't come up with something that wasn't already thought of by someone else anyway- It's the main ingredient that makes the meal- everything else should just compliment the flavor......

You should see what I'm cooking up next ;-)

I went to the open house for Michael Switzer's DESIGN WORKS STUDIO last night ( pictured w/yours truley on left and Michael on the Right) in a renovated building he's put a lot of sweat and tears in. Don't ask me why- but this is one of MY favorite images from the "Pittsburgh Project" The fish was a bit of grafitti on a wall near a bench overlooking the city; I "brushed" a few things on the photo ( in photoshop of course) and really liked it. I have no idea what it's supposed to represent- but it looks like some kind of idol- a "Fish Spirit" of some sort....

I was doing a bit of mentoring with a fellow photographer this weekend, and one of the locations we went to was an old train station near Gauley Bridge in WV.
It's been abandoned for a long time and I wouldn't recomend going in- but here's a view from one of the open doors.
I always wonder what places were like when they were new, or at their peak of operations, becuase you just know there was a lot of activity here at one time!

I just read ( and replied) to a blog called PHOTOALLIES by Greg Clarke- he's trying to establish a "mentoring program" with the ASMP ( American Society of Media Photographers) in LA.
I know, I know, you're thinking "C- what's that got to do with me?"
I don't really know- actually. maybe something, maybe nothing....
But If you've ever had someone mentor you and/or take you under their wing to show you how to be a photographer, then go over to his blog and reply on his post- I think the first step on any path is to ask for help and he has.
Think of it as "payback"....

what is art?

I found this quote from someone in the "flickr stream" and loved it.
I think that this thought is what elevates anyones passion ( photography for me) to the next level- finding out what something means to you; then translating that into a "share-able" experience for someone else.

back from the "land of the bed"...

Getting sick sucks! Sometimes you may think that a small break would be nice- or just deing "a little sick" on a pretty day would be OK; but when it HITS you, it's never "just a little" or "nice to be off."
For the past week, I've been down with a respritory infection that had me too sore to lay down and too weak to get up- definetly not my favorite way to be off from work!
But it does make you slow down and take a look at things- For the first time- I felt like I'm in a good place in my life . I was able to take off sick- and know things would be OK- I had a dog who brought me his toys and a cat who slept with me for company, a wife who was worried about me; things could've been worse....
Anyway, I'm back upright and moving ( maybe shouldn't be after all...) and back to work. I'll try and post something more interesting next week after I get caught up a little.

I don't know what the name of this building is, but I liked the architectural details in it. From the Gothic Arch windows to the copper balls on the top near the building's windows. I thought this was interesting....It's the Chandelier located in the Crowne Plaza Hotel (next to the Dayton Convention Center) The sun was just coming thru the window as I was walking by and was lighting up the crystals! PPS Trade Show Booth

Just back from the Professional Photographers of Ohio's annual convention and tradeshow- the weather was great, which made for a good event.

I'd like to give a "shout out" to David Ziser, photographer extraordinaire! I recognized him and his lovely wife LaDawn from his blog at Digital Pro Talk and went to say "HI"

He laughed and was excited to know I was a "dailey reader" of his blog and was happy to meet with me. A very courteous and humble man ( as well as telented) LaDawn as gracious as she was beautiful- they are quite the pair!

we had a good laugh at his "celebrity status" and went on our way. But it was nice to know the ground touched his feet just the same as everybody elses; and he was aware of that too.

I'll be posting a few more photos from this weekend in the next few days, so check back in!

Well, if you're a photographer, a wannabe photographer, or someone who's ever wanted to hold a camera; this book's for you.

I'm sure there will be posts galore saying wonderful things about it, and what can I possibly say that won't be said already?

fair enough- just read on anyway....

1) I just got my book yesterday and was up til midnight reading it.

2) I'm getting ready to start work today and wish I could re-read it!

That alone says it's a successful idea or book to me; when I can't shake it out of my mind.

Here's how it works:

Joe has an image that you've probably seen in a magazine or print somewhere that just blows your mind. On the next page next to it is the thought process of WHY he took the shot the way he did, and then a quote or thought that becomes the highlight ( notice I didn't say lesson ) or parable to the story-= in short the POINT behind the story AND the shot.

And you know what? the reason I'm not going to quote an exerpt from the book on my post? He says it much better than me!

I'm not going to say go out and buy the book ( RUN and buy the book- borow a copy- but not mine) because this book makes sense; commom sense at that - and it changes your perspective on photography while allowing you to keep your style.

There are plenty of books out there that we use as manuals, that tell us step by step HOW to do something; there are very few books out there that help us THINK for ourselves by example.

In short- this book makes a difference- It may well define a photographers mind.

Well, it's almost here! What is it you ask? Why, my newly re-designed website of course.....
I had originally planned to do this last year- BUt the backend management of the website was not going as planned.... So, solutions had to be found and improvements made!
Some of the changes coming ( and almost done- we're down to image selection now) are faster loading pages, galleries that are more interactive and selective, and the BIGGIE for 2008- shopping cart for fine art onlineprint sales!
I'll be letting everyone know when the "big day" arrives; I'm pretty excited about it- so stay tuned......

I mentioned a few posts back about Jason Moore Photography's blog
and he is looking back on some of the interviews he's had in the past year.
Yep, I'm in there again- but I encourage you to go and take a look at how cool everyone else's answer was to the question "What would be your most important piece of advice about life?"

For anyone who doesn't want to MAKE THE JUMP, here is my reply:
“Balance –Don’t forget about the important people in your life, other things beside photography that need to be taken care of. It’s so easy to forget that too. I am the kind of person that can be out driving somewhere and will say “Oooh, let me stop and make a quick photo of that interesting (insert person/tree/brook/scenic/ here) – the lights almost right!” and then an hour later I’m still not done. Trust me You may enjoy the moment, but the person beside you may get a little tired of the indulgence.” - Clayton Spangler

Free Advice ( and worth every penny!)

About a year ago, I did an online interview with Jason D. Moore, and some of his questions were about the why and the what-all of being a photographer. The really cool thing was- he asked the same question from a pool of very talented photographers and each answered in a remarkable and different way! ( I'm STILL honored I was asked to participate!)
Some of his favorite answers to the select questions are being highlighted on his blog.

The question featured was:
What advice do you have for a novice creative professional/photographer?
My answer was:
“Learn the basics; crawl before you try to walk, that sort of thing. Digital has made photographers of us all, but not all of us photographers. If you can’t work the camera to get the best results possible -but have to rely on the camera to tell you what to do - then your personal vision will not take place, nor be communicated effectively. A photographer has to have a clarity of vision, a passion for the craft. Be able to MAKE a picture instead of just TAKE a picture. You have to be a story teller with every shot, or the idea fails.”

I strongly recommend you check out all of the comments- there are many better than mine that will guide you in your quest for true photographic nirvana!

Last person on earth...

Here's some food for thought-
I was checking out a blog topic on strobist called "our photos, Ourselves" about a movie that featured Nick Nolte as a photojournalist.
That's not the point......
The point being made was being able to detach yourself from your photography to make objective decisions on whether an image you make is good or bad.
There was a comment made back about movies - as it became a little off topic- The question arose ( inspired from the Twilight Zone marathon) "If you were the last person on earth, would you still take photographs even tho no one else would see them?"

I thought about it- and I have to say yes; yes I would!
Even tho I wouldn't have anyone elses feedback as to what they really thought ( good or bad)

I would still feel a need to make photographs that meant something to me personally.

I wouldn't think that a writer would stop writing, or a sculpture would stop sculpting- granted the subject matter may change-but the essence of that person would still need to be expressed.

I think that I would make images that move me- if nothing else; help me to remember what once was....

PS: Plus- I'd be able to exhibit ANYWHERE I wanted to....

1st day back

Since the snow didn't start falling til last night , here is an image from my "Glimpse Of Appalachia" exhibit.

It was 12 degrees when I stepped out side this morning. Several inches of snow, and it hasn't stopped 3 hours later. ( although I think it's warmed up to about 16 now....)

For those of you in warmer climates; Winter has it's own beauty- there is a "clean-ness" to the look as snow covers the land , hiding away those things that take away.

( not that I don't THINK about a nice warm beach after a few weeks of this..... - LOL)

I went to the B. E. Taylor Christmas Concert last night and it was quite a show!

Lots of great contemporary Christmas music - not your parents christmas carols!( not that there's anything WRONG with that...)
ANYWAY- you leave the show feeling better than when you went in- it's that good!
Highly recommend going to see them when they hit a city near you.

OK, I'm the bad blogger- but remember that little description to the side>>>>>>>>

I also work at a professional photolab and it's CRAZY busy! So I may have neglected posting a litttle( ok, a lot!) lately...besides, who ever thought printing went the way of the dinasour when life became digital?- try keeping up with me one day during a holiday season...
So, here are some updates:
1) Thankgiving was fine- I ate too much; thank you for asking!
2) Chico decided it was time he learned how to dig up the yard. ( Chico the wonderdog)
3) I have three new product shots lined up to do.
4) New website is being designed and "FLASH" is a bitch to work with!
5) I have no shopping done- so guess what you're getting for Christmas...SURPRISE!

Actually, I like being busy- and after this many years- it's all really quite average for me. This is what I do; so I plan for it. Take the above more tongue in cheek than a rant....
I'm just a bad blogger.... :-)

I mentioned in my last post about how "blogs" have changed how we seek information and how we interact with people on a "cyber" level now a days; I thought Id share a few of my Fav's in case anyone wants to take a look. Be sure and notice how many other directions they will send you with THEIR links! You could lose all track of time and not come out til next week; so be careful!

"On Location With Rick Lee" - new stuff everyday; the man never sleeps; unless it's on a plane to his next shoot....
"Photoshop Insider" - Scott Kelby is not only funny, he has good stuff on his blog that I can use! ( Plus, he was a nice person when I met him before he "blogged"... )
"John Nack on Adobe"- John is a Photoshop Insider, but don't let that fool you! He's one of us and loves to share some very technologically eclectic stuff.
"Jason D Moore"- OK, this one is still evolving. It started out as "soup to nuts" and has grown into the blog it is today. I like the P andP blogroll( interesting people) and his interviews ( even MORE interesting people) of industry insiders.
"Strobist"- This is the best! If you like using minimal lighting to get big results ( AND make some of your own gear) this is a must see...
"What the Duck" - OK, technically this isn't a blog; it's a website. But I check it out dailey anyway!

food for thought( or; where have you been?)

As a few of you might have noticed ( ok- HOPEFULLY noticed) I haven't made any new posts this week. I've been a bit under the weather and slacked off due to the computer not being turned on at all!( I'm "on the mend" as my grandmother used to say...)
It occurred to me as I looked in my "Favorite Folders" ( I have one the says DAILY and one that says PHOTOGRAPHERS) how I have them arranged now.
Before I noticed "blogging", I would find an interesting website by a photographer who's work I admired and would check back on it occasionally to get some inspiration. As more and more of us BLOG, I would put the better ones into a "daily" folder- meaning just that- I would check in every day to see what was new with them, what inspired, worked, or didn't work, or was just plain cool.
Well, like I said - I've been off of my routine for a while and went first to my "photographer" folder because I REALLY needed some inspiration- and then to my "Daily's" and noticed two things.
1)DAILY"S -It's twice the size of my "photographers" folder and ...
2) I started adding more to it because someone else saw something on somebody elses blog and thought it was cool; and said" go have a look! "

Blogging has transformed almost overnight how we diseminate information to the masses, shows who we are better than any old website, and keeps "creatives" in touch better than phone calls ( well, maybe not PHONE CALLS.... yet!)
But I researched how many people "hit" my blog each day and I am amazed some of you think I have much of anything of value to say- but it "inspires me" and prods me to "keep the faith" and do more!
I'll be posting more photos soon, I promise! and maybe I'll do something "fresh" like give you some insight "behind the scenes" as it were. You'll just have to come back and see!

Yep- it's me

Every year, we have a base jumping extravaganza second to none- Bridge Day!

876 feet above the New River Gorge parachuting BASE jumpers jump off a perfectly good bridge and have 8 seconds to open their chutes and survive. I've only covered this once when someone didn't make it- but there are rocks on the shore, so even if you make it that far and miss the landing area- you can still end up in a world of hurt!

Jet boats cover the water landings and emergency crews are everywhere- so if you do get hurt; help is right there waiting on you- personally, I'm content to already be at the bottom of the gorge- even if it takes me a little longer to get here!

This was more amazing than the photo can convey.

I was there standing on the talas field looking down into the valley. People were laying and sitting on large boulders about 50 feet below me. We all watched the sun start to slip down over the horizon; and as the rays of light curved over the event edge- you could here people suck in their breath and hold it- It was a shared experience that I wouldn't trade for anything! Think of your favorite movie with a crowd of people waiting for it to start and the reaction when the images start to apear on screen. It was like that; only better.....

Of course; not one to take the standard view- I turned my camera to the side and caught the sidelight of the sunset!

Ok, gang! I want to throw this out there and see if anybody can help....

I'm a big fan of Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo`ole , a traditional Hawaiian singer who's since passed away. His music is more popular today than ever- but no NEW music by him.....

So....if anybody has any connections to or IN Hawaii; check and see who the new group or artist is that carries on his tradition. No slack key guitar music please! I'm much more interested in basic traditional authentic hawaiian songs, chants, and the like.

BTW: It's been a busy week and I'm almost done with my Fall Photo Safari photos I took- I'll try and post a few more "keepers" by next week...

Dolly Sods

Dolly Sods, WV

Things are progressing right along at image central- here's a shot of pine trees on Dolly Sods at "Bare Rocks".

Notice that the trees are only growing limbs one way? That's because the weather is so severe and the winds so strong there that the limbs are all going in one direction!

The elevation is a litle over 4000 feet and the vegitation is similar to what you would find in Canada.

A very unique place to visit!

This weekend was certainly an adventure! From clear star filled nights, to sunsets at the highest point in WV! This was probably the best "Fall photography safari" I've ever went on. LOTS of images....
Met a few friends along the way and made a few new ones. I'll be scattering a few images here and there as I get them edited- this is the first one I took from Dolly Sods at an overlook called "Bare Rocks" ( you'll get the understanding of the name as I post more images of it in daylight...)

Well gang, It's that time of year again! Fall is here; Time to find that perfect light and match it up to some Awsome locations. I'll be traveling to west Virginia's Potomac Highlands for a few days- Some of the states most photogenic landscapes!

I'm not going to be able to "post from the road" in realtime; But I'll try to keep a few notes and images from the days to go with them for a "Post" post.

Green Photography

Green is... well, Green- and good for everybody! But as photographers we sometimes don't think we have much impact on the environment by what we choose to shoot, or how we have to photograph. But we do!
We can make a HUGE difference by shooting closer to home, photographing places and things we care about, taking better care of our equipment. Jason Moore at Jason Moore Photography's Blog turned me onto the Nikon supported "Assignment Earth" and has tips on ways we can come together as photographers and make a difference.

I'll be talking to the Charleston Camera Club on October 1st ( Monday) for around an hour- hour and a half, about some specifics of commercial lighting and assignments-
They( the CCC ) have their monthly meetings in the South Charleston Library every 1st and 3rd Monday of each month starting at 7:00 pm; so if you're in the neighborhood, come on down.....they are always looking for new members and I'm sure they would love to have you!

WTD Bass Guitar- Final

The Finished WTD Bass- Trust me, I could've fixed this guitar in Photoshop faster and easier!

Well, here it is ( and me too) with the "What The Duck" Ibanez SR 490 Bass Guitar that I won from Aaron Johnson, Creator of the "WTD" Comic Strip.

The Bass is completely playable- ( Sorry 'bout that Aaron...) and sounds great!

I had a couple of people ask me why I would bid ( Won this on eBay) on a guitar with a broken neck in the first place; there were a couple of reasons:

1) I read "WTD" every day- it makes me laugh

2) It makes me laugh at others...

3) Aaron's going to go far ( He's been accepted into syndication) and I want to be sure to cash in on his name later!

What The Duck Bass Guitar Update

* Time for a patient update*
The Guitar is in recovery now- As you can see, the front of the headstock sustained the most splintering- but overall- I'm pleased with how it's turning out!
My next step is to let the stain cure 12 hours; then I'll buff it down, spray a clear coat over it, buff, and repeat till it looks like new- or at least as close as I can get!
( I used to do Guitar repairs for a music store called the "Pied Piper long ago- and this really brought back a lot of memories! Fun stuff...)

OK Everybody; The "What The Duck" Bass from "WTD" Creator Aaron Johnson is finally here!

Front artwork on the Ibanez Bass

As some of you know, Aaron is also in a band called "Sweet Jelly" , and during a gig, his Bass took a dive and broke the headstock off. I am attempting to :
A) repair the guitar to playablility.
B) If it isn't reapirable to play; at least have a place for guitar hooks to hold it on the wall of my office!

THE PATIENT IN SURGERY

the break was fairly clean, so I am clamping the "wound " together with hopes it will be strong enough to restring. There is a veneer of Mahogany wood on top of the headstock that may be too damaged to repair , I have the "flecks" that came off of it- so we'll have to wait and see how bad the joint is after it's unclamped.

I'll give an update on the "patient" in a few days with better photos of the artwork, signings, and the overall instrument.

***Update***

I took the clamps off this morning, and while the joint is dry- it needs to cure. The overall break is just a seam in the wood now, so I'm hopeful. There was some splintering on the headstock that will take some work cosmetically to make it look right.

That being said- The artist and creator , Aaron Johnson is also a musician with the band called Sweet Jelly - He recently put his old bass on ebay and said that if a WTD fan won the bass, he'd sign and put a WTD sketch on it as an "incentive" to bid for it.
I won the bid for the Bass- and after being emailed by Aaron with the preliminary idea for what he wants to put on the bass- All I can say is I CAN"T WAIT TO GET IT!

Here is the scene at Books A Million at midnight last night ( this morning?)
A parking lot that is meant for about 15 stores was FULL TO OVERFLOWING for fans of Harry Potters New Book!
Every person you see in the photo was there to pick up a copy! ( there were several thousand of us!)
It was totally off the hook! It took about 45 min. to get from the door to the counter to redeem my ticket for the reserved copy I had ( as did all these other fine folks) I thought it was a pretty smooth operation!
Spoiler: Someone dies in the first chapter- no it isn't Harry!

Dog Tired at 3 months

His new thing is to chew my hair looking for fleas as he does his flea bite- It's all cute fun and games; til he clamps down and pulls! OUCH!

New Puppy Post

Well, here is my new best friend CHICO. He's now about 12 wks old. You can see a little more personality in him( OK, at least I see it...) that in my previous post- he's getting all grown up!
He's now about 12 inches tall; all all teeth and tail - I should have named him nibbles...
I don't know how much he wieghs, but it is a t least double now.
I know this photo isn't all that "Artistic" but he doesn't set still for long at one time! ( maybe I'll get a cute one whle he sleeps!)

New Addition To The Family

Well, we now have a dog! He is a male about 8-10 weeks old out of a litter of 10. he is a Lab/Golden retriever mix - we haven't named him yet; but are waiting for him to give us a hint of his personality first!
I didn't expect we'd be getting a puppy - but my wife has wanted one for a long time and ...well, you know.....
Anyway - the cat seems to tolorate him pretty well, and we've introduced him to all the neighborhood dogs- they like him too; So I guess he stays....( Good thing since it was either me or the dog!)
If anybody has name suggestions, please feel free to let me know what you think ( No- Ol' Yeller won't be considered! ! LOL )

OK, I don't normally plug someone elses work on my blog - unless it's cool, right?
Well here's something for the professional photographer that is just that; COOL!
Beth Forester ( Forester Photography ) came up with "Photoduds", ( stands for photo Digital Unique Designs) sort of a "designer in a box" that allows a photographer to digitally layout their images into designs that can be made into the "flush mount" book design that is sooo popular right now ( but not so easy to do without this product!)

Back from the road

Well, back from the Mid East Photographers Conference held in Dayton, OH - and it was great!
Lots of good venders ( especially Photo Production Services- A full servicec digital /commercial photo lab) I always enjoy seeing the latest gadgets and devices to make my lifes work easier!
The print competitions were excellent ( I scored 2 merit prints/ Blue Ribbons in the commercial catagory!)
So, hopefully I'll get all caught up on stuff that was waiting for me when I got back, and have more to share with you all soon!

The Award

Took a quick shot of my trophy this morning, just wanted to share .
Not for any bragging reasons, but because what it means to me.
This is a milestone- A chance to reflect on what got me this far.
The cool thing is how I started getting a clearer vision of the work I wanted to do and the work I wanted to create.
I think back to when I started this journey and just wanted to be able to take pictures - Now I want to tell and express stories one image at a time.
To have an award of this caliber bestowed upon me is to validate all the hard work it has taken to get me to this point.
I am greatful.

I just got back in town from attending the Professional Photographers of West Virginia Spring Convention.

I am pleased to announce I have recieved my very first FUJIFILM MASTERPIECE AWARD of excellence in the Commercial print competition catagory!

*I also received the Joeseph Blackwood Award for best color print in the commercial catagory; as well as recognition for the highest scoring print ( Glory of the Green) in last years print competition. ( from the Fall PPWV Convention)

There is a website that I became aware of thru my fujifilm Talent Team affiliations; It's called Forests Forever ( http://www.forests-forever.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi ) This isn't your typical website in so much as it is sponsered by Fuji- yet - isn't an "AD" for them.
There are grave issues with our envirnment that we are all facing; The first step of "the cure" is to become educated. This website does just that, but in a none-threatening and enjoyable way.

A sad day indeed

A very good friend of mine passed away this weekend . Stu Blake was his name.
We had known each other from childhood and he was a well respected and loved individual. I know there are some of you out there that may know him, many will not.
I just got back from standing in line at his wake for over two hours, but I'm not complaining ; it was an honorto be there.
I got to talk with many old friends and heard hilarious stories about their memories of Stu. I am not stretching the truth when I say there was an estimate of close to 2000 people who came to pay their respects. He would have been amazed at all the fuss, but he would've been deeply touched.
The last time I got to talk with him was Christmas Eve. We laughed at the adventures we had gotten ourselves into and the things we had gotten out of together. He told me how much he appreciated having a friend like me - I said thank you; but in truth I was the one who was glad to be able to call him that.
He was not bitter for all that had happened, he never stopped fighting! His last words to his wife were " I never said "uncle" did I?" (his way of saying I never gave up.)
I felt compelled to write this in my blog because things seem to have a life of their own in cyberspace, and no one really goes away if they are remembered. I hope that Stu will be around forever; and Stu, if you read this- save a can of peanut brittle for me, OK?
